What cookies are
Cookies are small text files placed on a device by a website or by services used to deliver that website. Similar technologies include local storage and session storage. They can remember a choice, support security, measure use or make a feature behave consistently between pages.
The cookie banner lets you accept optional cookies, reject non-essential cookies or open preferences. Essential cookies are used because the site cannot operate reliably without them. Optional analytics and functional cookies are used according to the choice recorded by the banner.
Cookie categories
| Category | Purpose | Examples of data | Control |
|---|---|---|---|
| Essential | Runs core site functions, remembers the cookie choice, supports security and allows pages to load correctly. | Consent choice, session identifiers, security signals and basic request information. | Always active where necessary for the service. |
| Analytics | Helps understand aggregate readership patterns, such as which pages are visited and how visitors move through the site. | Page address, approximate device and browser information, referral information and event data. | Controlled through the banner and browser settings. |
| Functional | Remembers optional display or preference choices so the site can present a consistent experience. | Preference settings such as stored display choices or form-related convenience settings. | Controlled through the banner and browser settings. |
Consent and changes
When you make a banner choice, it is stored in local storage so the banner does not reappear on every page. You can change your choice by clearing site data in your browser and returning to the website. If we add a new cookie purpose that requires consent, the banner may be shown again.
Browser controls
Most browsers allow you to block cookies, delete existing cookies, clear local storage or set rules for particular sites. The exact controls vary by browser. Common locations include privacy, security or site settings. Blocking all cookies may affect essential functions, including the ability to remember your banner choice.
Mobile devices may also provide advertising or tracking controls at operating-system level. Those settings can work alongside the website banner, but they do not replace the choices available on this site.
Third-party services
Some cookies or similar signals may be set by service providers that help with hosting, security, analytics, email handling or performance monitoring. Those providers process data to deliver their service to us and may have their own documentation about storage, retention and security. We review the role of such services when adding or changing site features.
Legal basis
In the United Kingdom, cookie use is governed by the Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations and data protection law, including the UK GDPR where personal data is involved. Essential storage is used for legitimate operational purposes. Optional analytics and functional storage rely on consent where required.
